SUPREME COURT OF KENYA: UHURU MUIGAI KENYATTA VALIDLY ELECTED 4TH PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA.
Official results of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) said Mr Kenyatta beat Mr Odinga by 50.07% to 43.28% in the March 4th General Elections, avoiding a run-off by just 8,100 votes.Mr Kenyatta and his running mate, William Ruto, are facing trial on charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for allegedly fuelling unrest after that election. They deny the charges.“Uhuru and his running mate William Ruto were validly elected,” said Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga in a brief ruling at the Supreme Court shortly after 5pm [GMT+3] Nairobi time. The ball is now firmly on the president-elect's court to deliver on each and every promise that he gave Kenyans during the Presidential campaigns. Equally, the opposition members of parliament have to roll up their sleeves and check on the excesses of the in-coming government. The Kenyan electorate should be more than willing to thank God for the atmosphere of peace that has prevailed in the country since the electoral process began early this year. Kenya's foreign policy now comes into sharp focus since the country currently has its defence forces battling Islamist militants inside war-torn Somalia. The ICC cases notwithstanding, the onus is on the president-elect to prove his innocence by mounting a sustained legal battle and fully co-operating with the Court to avoid Kenya being targeted by economic sanctions and international isolation. The outgoing Prime Minister Raila Odinga must now gracefully accept the verdict and live to fight another day.
